Strathpeffer Dolls With Stories To Tell

Jennifer Maxwell, curator of the Highland Museum of Childhood at Strathpeffer, has many treasures which she can talk about. Obviously, the museum is themed around childhood, taking its origin from the bequest of a doll collection by Angela Kelly, but Jennifer is keen that it is not seen as just another doll museum.

"We have so much more than just dolls, there are many boys' toys and we are building up our collection of contemporary playthings."

However, it is the dolls' story that Jennifer has chosen to focus on for her Curator's Pride slot. She tells the story of three dolls linked by two stories. These give insight into Victorian marriage rituals, childhood and class relations. So not just something for the kids to cuddle, then.
