Managing Archives

Aimed at librarians, museum staff and local history society members, this course will provide an overview of the issues associated with the management, handling and storage of archives. By the end of the participants will have and understanding of:

 ·        what archives actually are, why they are kept and the role of the archivist

·        legislation affecting archives

·        the basics of archival theory

·        the issues involved in collecting, appraising and selecting archives

·        how to arrange and catalogue archives and the professional standards employed

·        the physical management archives, their storage and basic preservation techniques

·        how to manage public access and use of archives

·        sources of where to get further help and advice
