Children's Book Competition

Scotlands Vikings

Our good friends at NMS Enterprises Ltd., have come up trumps again! We have been sent two copies of Scotland's Vikings, a new publication from the subsidiary of the National Museums Scotland.

The book is part of the award winning Scotties series of activity books for children, Scotland's Vikings tells their story from blood-curdling and violent beginnings to the end of Norse power in 1469. Follow the Vikings as the settled large areas of the North and West of Scotland.

Find out:

  • why the Vikings travelled west-over-sea to Scotland
  • when and where they settled
  • why they sometimes buried their chiefs in longships
  • how the Picts and Scots coped with these invaders
  • what legacy the vikings left behind

It is expanded and redesigned, illustrated with photos of Viking objects from the collections of the National Museums Scotland.

Teachers! There is an eight page pull-out black and white section with games, puzzles and drawings to colour in  - these can be photocopied for classroom use.

Competition! This competition is open to primary school age pupils, (or even their teachers!)

  • The Norse gods have given their names to three of our weekdays – Odin, Thor and Frigga. Can you work out which days these are?

Entries by email to Gordon at gordon@heritagenorth.org.uk. Mark the subject line "Viking competition". Closing date - 15th June.
