May 2008 Heritage Feature: Berneray develops photo archive

Berneray school

Berneray Historical Society  have just held a successful open weekend with a temporary exhibition about Berneray School, which was built in 1887 and eventually closed in 2005. Islanders enjoyed reviewing pictures of their old schoolmates.

One of the purposes of the weekend was to gather more images of the island, particularly wedding photographs. In practice, as well as weddings, we were offered a diverse range of photographs to copy, which, added to our existing archive, offer a fascinating glimpse into island life over the last 120 years.

They are now preparing for their summer season – updating our displays in the Nurse’s Cottage and looking forward to meeting visitors both new to the island and those who have Berneray connections.

Of course, the society continues to welcome any additions to its archive.
