Where Culture and Social Enterprise Meet Conference 2010 Old Maps and New: A Highlands & Islands Enterprise / Creative Scotland Conference
A Conference celebrating the last and the next 20 years of communities and culture in the Highlands and IslandsCentre for Health Science, Inverness |
|
Introduction The landscape for cultural and heritage organisations has changed significantly in the 20 years since the 1991 Highlands and Islands conference examining the social and economic impact of the arts. Arguably better resourced, more connected and thriving despite many challenges, the future for the cultural sector, however, will be increasingly demanding.Inspired by the Norman MacCaig poem of the same title, and on the 100th anniversary of his birth, Old Maps and New reviews territories past and plans for future terrain. Old Maps and New will combine reflection and debate, exchange and inspiration, and for the first time in the Highlands & Islands, bring together speakers from the cultural, heritage and Social Enterprise sectors on a shared platform. A full programme will be available, together with a briefing paper by François Matarasso, from October 8th. Keynote Speakers will include: Seona Reid, Director of Glasgow School of Art; Willy Roe, Chair of Highlands and Islands Enterprise; Andrew Dixon, Chief Executive of Creative Scotland, and Neil Maclean, Director of the Social Enterprise Academy. |

| Outline Programme - Friday 12th November and Saturday 13th November Starting at noon, Friday’s speakers will review where we’ve come from, continuity and change, and the new and evolving paradigms that have been created. The facilitated discussion sessions give delegates the chance to tease out the issues, the meeting points and opportunities in the new landscape of cultural social enterprise. The day will close with an evening focused around a celebratory conference dinner, but we also welcome suggestions and ideas for a Fringe, where delegates can present their success stories. Limited space on site is available to display material, to host mini-meetings and to showcase (small) work, or perhaps even a performance. With such a wide variety of participants, this will be an invaluable opportunity to meet and network, even possibly beyond the confines of the main event itself, so if you have an idea for other events that might happen elsewhere in Inverness immediately before or after the conference, we can help promote and include them in the programme. Saturday’s programme will be inspired by the future. Faced with the prospect of shrinking resources, the speakers will focus on how to nurture social entrepreneurship and look at innovative models to grow creative activity in our communities. The closing panel comprising Creative Scotland, Museums and Galleries Scotland, HISEZ, Heritage Lottery Fund and chaired by the Scottish Social Enterprise Coalition, offers the opportunity to explore and ask the key questions in a wider forum. The conference will end at 1400 on Saturday with a final lunch and networking session. See link below to apply... |
