Writing a Collection Care Plan

Collections care is an essential part of managing and maintaining a successful museum.

This course is an introduction to the main issues related to the care of museum and heritage collections. The two main sides of collections care, preventive conservation and remedial conservation, will be covered.

Preventive conservation aims to prevent damage and slow down deterioration through a number of actions. Preventive conservation covers the following areas:
 ·               The building as first line of defence
·               Environmental monitoring and control
·               Storage and display materials and methods
·               Housekeeping
·               Handling and moving

Remedial conservation focuses on the treatment of collection items that have already suffered damage or deterioration, in order to stabilise and improve their condition. Remedial conservation covers the following areas:
 ·               Condition assessments
·               Treatment programme

At the end of the course participants will be familiar with the main issues of collections care and how they impact on museum collections. They will have developed an awareness for these issues and will be able to implement some of them in their own work place.
