| 21 May 2008 The Shetland Museum and Archives is to host an exhibition of knitting produced by Shetland’s primary school children. ‘The Market’ is the result of this academic year’s work and highlights both the children’s skills and enjoyment they get from their knitting. With knitted work ranging from fish and jewellery to cakes and toys set out on market stalls, the exhibition is varied and fun, including simple and more accomplished pieces. Jennie Bradley, one of the knitting teachers, explained more: “Children are taught throughout their primary years, so by the time they leave Primary 7 they should have a grounding in basic techniques and a taster in knitting Fair Isle and lace. The most important factor though is that they enjoy the craft, and I think this comes across in the exhibition.” The Museum and Archives is looking forward to hosting the exhibition. Kirsty Kennedy, Lifelong Learning Officer, said: “Shetland has a world-wide reputation for knitting, and we have many fantastic examples in our collection. With this exhibition, we are showcasing the fabulous work of the next generation of Shetland knitters.” Noelle Henderson, SIC Schools Service Creative Links Officer, commented: “Apart from the obvious benefit of acquiring a new skill, it is important for the children to gain an insight into our heritage, an appreciation for what went before and a desire to keep the tradition going and interpret it in a modern setting.” ‘The Market’ exhibition will be in the learning room for one week, 1st - 7th June.
